Brief introduction
Ion exchange is increasingly used in hydrometallurgical applications to recover or purify metal solutions and slurries. Because ion exchange resins can enrich and adsorb metal ions from dilute solutions through ion exchange reactions, and exhibit different selectivities for mixed metal ions, they are particularly well-suited for extracting and separating metals from leachates or slurries of low-grade minerals and tailings. They also play a crucial role in separating metals with similar performance characteristics.

Ion exchange resins can be used for the extraction of various metals, including rare and precious metals. In gold extraction, they can be used in thiosulfate, cyanide, and gold chloride extraction. In precious metal extraction, they can extract platinum group metals such as platinum and palladium. In the molybdenum and rhenium industry, they can recover rhenium and molybdenum from sulfuric acid solutions produced from molybdenum and copper, and molybdenum from nitric acid extraction processes. In the copper and nickel industry, they can be used to extract divalent transition metals such as copper, nickel, zinc, and cadmium from ores, electroplating layers, acid baths, and wastewater. In the vanadium and scandium industry, they can extract vanadium and scandium.
